Top 10 Tips For Packing

When it comes to packing your home to move, we here at Olympus Moving and Storage have a great deal of expertise on the subject. The following is a list of tips that will give you the help you need to successfully pack and move your home.

  1. Pick A Starting Point
One of the hardest parts about packing is figuring out where to start. Whether you decide to pack the small items first, or work on a room by room basis, choosing a starting point helps determine how long it will take you to get the job done.

  2. Choose The Right Boxes
You may require different boxes depending on what items you need to move. Maybe it makes more sense to pack several small boxes, or perhaps you have larger possessions that would benefit from using a few large boxes.

  3. Give Yourself Enough Time
Some of us are able to pack up and move out quickly. Most of us, however, need at least 2 or 3 months to fully pack our home and be ready. Be sure not to wait until the last minute.

  4. Obtain Supplies
Packing goes much faster with the right tools. Running out of boxes, or packing tape, or packing peanuts is a nightmare, especially if it takes place close to moving day. Ensure that your packing supplies are plentiful before you begin.

  5. Know Your Packing Style
A common mistake people make is simply tossing everything into a moving truck or a car with no rhyme or reason. This makes unpacking a much bigger hassle than need be. Plan how you want to load the truck or car before you pack it up.

  6. Be Careful With Appliances
Appliances, especially major ones, must be packed with great care. Many major appliances require an uninstall before packing, or else they will not work properly at your new home.

  7. Label Your Plugs
Electronics are easier to pack than appliances, but can become difficult without the proper precautions. Make sure to label all of your plugs before packing, to make for easier installation at your next place of residence.

  8. Pack A Box Of Essentials
We've all moved before, packing important day to day items away, not realizing we will need them upon arrival. Make sure to set aside a box of the most crucial items you are going to need.

  9. Use Larger Boxes For Fragile Items
Another common mistake movers make is packing picture frames and mirrors into boxes that are the perfect size. Instead, give these fragile items some breathing room to decrease the risk of damage.

  10. Bubble Wrap For Kitchenware
When packing plates and flatware, don't be stingy with the bubble wrap. Otherwise, you will arrive at your new home, only to find a box of shards where your plates used to be.
